Lap Band Procedure

In this procedure, a band is placed at the top of the stomach. This reduces the amount of food entering the stomach and provides a sensation of fullness. At the Weight Loss Center, the procedure is performed through an approach called laparoscopy. Laparoscopy is also called keyhole surgery, and refers to a method of surgery that eliminates cutting or stapling of the stomach.

Gastric Bypass Procedure

In the gastric bypass, the surgeon first divides the stomach into a small upper pouch and a much larger, lower pouch, and then reconstructs the small intestine to allow both pouches to stay connected to it. Surgeons have developed several different ways to reconnect the intestine, leading to the different gastric bypass procedure (GBP) names you may find as you research weight loss surgery.

Sleeve Gastrectomy Procedure

In a sleeve gastrectomy, the patient’s stomach is reduced to about 15 percent of its original size by surgically removing of a large portion of it. Sleeve gastrectomy is also a restrictive procedure, and decreases ghrelin secretions from the fundus of the stomach (ghrelinis a hormone responsible for increase in appetite).

Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery procedures are done through small incisions, using long surgical instruments and video cameras.

Laparascopic Hernia Repair

Laparascopic Hernia Repair

During this surgery, the surgeon will make four tiny incisions around the hernia. A laparascope is inserted into one of the incisions. The instruments to repair the hernia are then inserted in the other incisions in the lower abodomen. Mesh is placed over the defect to reinforce the abdominal wall.

Laparascopic Nissen Fundoplication

When lifestyle changes and/or medication fail to relieve symptoms of GERD/reflux, a surgical procedure called Nissen fundoplication is used to correct the condition. This procedure can be done minimally invasively.

Laparascopic Colorectal Surgery

During this surgery the laparoscope is inserted through one port and attached to a camera. Through the remaining ports, long-handled instruments are used to perform fine dissection, cutting, and suturing, eventually joining two ends of bowel together, called an anastomosis.
